When the reporter encountered the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 it completely stumped him in spite of his brush with a number of high octane speed varieties on the race track. This also included all the Gallardo siblings and the 2013 Aventador Roadster with its awesome 700hp made his jaw drop all the way to the floor.
Only a day before he read about the Italian automakers newest exotic convertible and what was written was simply spectacular but he was “more worried about the open roof configuration and the cylinder deactivation system that he thought would hamper the performance of the Aventador or soften the image to be precise.” But the concern was unceremoniously wiped out when the supercar traveling at 150mph after coming off a 20 degree Miami Speedway drop and shooting on the straight stretch ahead. He was speechless as the supercar was approaching the red line while his heart beat wildly.
Shown at the Geneva Motor Show 2011 the Aventador LP 700-4 coupe was deemed as the replacement for the Murciélago flagship for the car manufacturer. The new Aventador boasts a monocoque passenger cabin frame of the full carbon fibre and push-rod suspension of advanced quality. The passenger cabin built with carbon composite has been advanced forward when Lamborghini built the Roadster. Scissoring off the top of a coupe can potentially turn it into wet noodle hence the car maker has commenced all the experience to stiffen the cell and reinforced it with carbon-fiber and behind the passenger they have filled it with composite. “Though it is not more rigid than the coupe, but you won’t able to detect it without laser sights,” the torsional rigidity has been reduced about 37%.
The flimsy top of the Murciélago Roadster has been done away with and the Aventador now sports a forged composite solid two-piece roof which when installed becomes stressed part of the chassis. It has lightweight roof panels, each piece weighing just 13 lbs, but can hog the entire storage in the trunk. Though the roof has been removed it still retains the scissor doors.
The 2013 Aventador LP 700-4 carries a 6.5 L V12 engine in its belly and it produces a smacking 700hp and 509 lb-ft torque. It also makes short work of the 0-60mph mark with 2.8 seconds and the 7-speed DCT transmission combines with the engine to achieve that. The AWD 2013 Aventador screams to 217 mph top speed even with a curb weight of 3582 lbs. With the base price of $445,300 it averages 10mpg for the city and 16 on the highway.
