2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, the best seller from LR gets sportier
Mouthing the moniker “Land Rover Range Rover Sport” is lengthy and difficult for some, but this has not put the British luxury sport utility at a disadvantage, rather “it was the top selling Land Rover model in the US last year, and it actually outsold the other LR models LR2, LR4, Evoque and Range Rover by finding more Yankee buyers.” Another significant factor about the Range Rover Sport is that it outsold the whole lot of Jaguars single handedly in the United State in both 2011 and 2012. it was the top selling Land Rover model in the US last year, and it actually outsold the other LR models LR2, LR4, Evoque and Range Rover by finding more Yankee buyers.
Another important factor in favor of the new entrant is that it was a Range Rover until now in name only, the Range Rover Sport. The Sport since its debut in 2006 was modeled on the large steel ladder frame and heavier machinations of Land Rover LR3/LR4. The exterior and interior too had been adapted from the flagship Range Rover but was still a sturdy LR4 underneath it.
But things have changed drastically for the 2014 model and the body has been turned into all-aluminum for the Sport with Range Rover flagship unitized body construction. A total of 800 lbs has been lost with the aluminum conversion and it significantly gains 8-speed automatic, huge ventilated disc brakes for all four, independent suspension and a range topper derived power steering of rack and pinion configuration.
The new Range Rover Sport also sees the debut of the supercharged 3.0 L V6 base engine with 340hp which also powers the XJ and XF sedans of Jaguar. This engine will be found in the huge Range Rover. According to Land Rover’s estimate the V6 Sport will be 0.3 seconds quicker to the last year’s model with 6.9 seconds for the 0-60 sprint. The old model was plump and it used a naturally aspirated V-8 offering 375 horsepower. A supercharged V8 5.0 L offering 510hp will be taking over the last year RR Sport. With the V8 Land Rover expects the Sport to breach the 0-60 in 5 seconds which is better by a second of the LR’s prediction for the six-speed with the same engine. Test drivers recorded 5.1 for the old V8.
No fuel economy estimates forthcoming from Land Rover yet, but with reduced weight, 8-speed transmission, stop-start engine features and power steering we can expect obvious improvement in the figures. The above features are standard in all Sport models of 2014 Range Rover. In the overall context considering all the pluses and additional features, you can only expect the sales of 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport scaling greater heights.
